BILBAO

PALACE

MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

The Bilbao Palace of Post and Telegraphs was inaugurated in 1927 and designed by architect Secundino Zuazo Ugalde (Bilbao, 1887–Madrid, 1971), one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Spanish architecture.

The building follows the curve of the street naturally, with a symmetrical composition in both plan and façade that elegantly integrates it into its urban surroundings.

The main cover is framed by elements inspired by historic Spanish architecture, while the brickwork treatment highlights Zuazo’s extraordinary mastery of construction.

The upper part of the building, set against a white expanse, emphasizes its monumental character and brings balance to the whole.

The architecture combines the Basque Country’s building traditions with a modern, rational style, establishing links with some of the European architectural movements of the period, particularly contemporary Dutch architecture.
