BILBAO
PALACE
MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE
The Bilbao Palace of Posts and Telegraphs was inaugurated in 1927 and designed by architect Secundino Zuazo Ugalde (Bilbao, 1887–Madrid, 1971), one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Spanish architecture.
The building naturally follows the curve of the street through a symmetrical composition in both plan and façade, elegantly integrating it into its urban surroundings.
The main cover is framed by elements inspired by historic Spanish architecture, while the brickwork treatment highlights Zuazo’s extraordinary construction expertise.
The upper section of the building, set against a white backdrop, emphasizes its monumental character and brings balance to the whole.
The architecture combines the Basque Country’s building traditions with a modern, rational style, connecting it to some of the European architectural movements of the time, particularly contemporary Dutch architecture.
