Workshop in the basement of the main Post Office on Vía Layetana.  A discreet but essential space, where minor faults were repaired and day-to-day maintenance was taken care of: lights, cupboards, lockers and keys. Despite its simplicity, this place reflects the importance of the invisible work that kept a lively, active building running. My documentary architecture project seeks precisely to highlight these hidden corners, rich in memory and humanity.

Basement of the main office, where the power batteries that ensured uninterrupted communications were located: from the telegraph and telex to the advent of the Internet. This space, steeped in technological history, reflects the invisible infrastructure that kept postal services connected and efficient for decades. My documentary architecture project seeks to capture these places in transition, revealing their significance and the memories they hold.

An empty storeroom in the historic main post office on Via Laietana in Barcelona. This space was used to store supplies for the customer service offices: boxes, envelopes, and everything needed to keep the postal service running day to day. Now abandoned, this place stands as a silent testament to the daily activity that supported thousands of shipments and communications. My documentary architecture series seeks to recover the memory of these spaces in transition, where absence reveals new meanings and emotions.

Mail sorting dock in the main post office, once filled with cages loaded with correspondence and parcels constantly on the move. Today, the space is silent, and even the forgotten boxes remain full of documents awaiting disposal. This contrast makes the dock a testament to postal memory, a symbol of the intensity of work in times gone by. My documentary architecture series seeks to reveal the poetry of these transitional spaces, where absence highlights the passage of time and the traces of human activity.

Mezzanine on the first floor, where the telegraph archives dating from before 1900 were held, true witnesses to the history of the officials who worked in this service. These documents record the presence of the first women able to work as civil servants, marking a milestone in the institution’s labour and social history. My documentary architecture series seeks to recover these spaces of memory, showing how archives and architecture reveal the history and everyday life of those who made the postal and telegraph service possible.

The old telegraph workshop (OP) at the main post office, a space that reflects the postal service’s technological transformation. Until just a few years ago, this very space was used as a technology workshop, where computers and work equipment were repaired. The contrast between past and present makes this space a symbol of adaptation and memory, where the documentary architecture reveals traces of the different uses that have shaped generations of workers.

Office in the former OP telegraph workshop, an almost deserted space where only a few forgotten chairs remain. The office window looks out onto Àngel Baixeres, visually connecting the intimacy of the place with the life of the city outside. My documentary architecture series seeks to capture the memory of these spaces that have changed function or fallen silent, revealing the history that still inhabits them and offering a poetic view of the passage of time.

The main office’s piano nobile, a space steeped in symbolism where the offices of the Heads of Posts and Telegraphs and their deputy directors were located. For decades, this was the decision-making centre connecting thousands of people across the country. Through my documentary lens, the image invites you to explore this space at leisure, discovering its architectural details and the traces of time in every corner.

The main floor of the main post office, a space rich in symbolism where the offices of the Heads of the Postal and Telegraph Services and their deputies were located. For decades,  this was the decision-making hub connecting thousands of people across the country. Through my documentary lens, the image invites you to explore this space at your own pace, discovering its architectural details and the traces of time in every corner.

A small office off the main office, where records were stamped and photocopies made. Its windows look out onto the magnificent Maravilloso Hall, offering a view of its paintings and the stained-glass windows in the dome. My documentary architecture project aims to preserve the memory of these workspaces, showing how even the most modest corners are steeped in history, artistic detail and everyday life.

Office of the Secretary to the Territorial Director of Catalonia, a completely desolate space that retains the memory of its administrative and hierarchical function. Through the absence of objects and activity, the place reveals its history and allows us to imagine the everyday life that unfolded there. My documentary architecture project seeks to recover the memory of these empty spaces, where stillness and abandonment offer new visual and emotional readings.

Occupational Health and Safety office, now empty, located on Fuster Street and overlooking the historic Gothic Quarter. This work is part of my documentary architecture project, which explores disused spaces that are rich in memory, silent witnesses to a time when these places were centres of activity and decision-making.

Multipurpose room on the sixth floor of the mail sorting department, a multifunctional space used for meetings, postal voting and celebrations. Its open layout and architectural features reflect the building’s working and social life, making it a place steeped in institutional and human memory. My documentary architecture series seeks to capture these spaces that combine functionality and aesthetics, showing how architecture reflects the activities and history of its users.

The corridor on the sixth floor of the postal department was a key space in Barcelona’s mail organisation. The offices of the district postal managers and urgent mail managers were located here; they were responsible for coordinating the movement of mail and ensuring an efficient service. This work is part of my documentary architecture series, which seeks to recover the memory of workplaces that are now silent, but were once at the heart of an essential service connecting an entire city.

Technology office in the postal building, a space that housed the relay antenna, which was still operational at the time. This place bears witness to the technological infrastructure that ensured connectivity and efficiency for postal and telegraph services. My documentary architecture series seeks to reclaim these spaces of technological memory, showing how architecture and technology coexist and reflect the evolution of communications.

Jeroni F. Granell i Manresa, architect (Barcelona, 1867–1931), came from a family of architects and master builders. He was one of the architects who helped shape Barcelona’s Modernist architecture. His work on the Barcelona Post Office building can be seen in the lobby’s stained-glass dome. Other notable works include Balmes 121; Gran Vía 582; Gran de Gracia 264; Roger de Lluria 84; Córcega 260. The skylights of the Palau de la Música Catalana. The magnificent iron-and-glass structure of the main post office, shown during its restoration in 2014. Normally, the structure is covered by a protective sheet, but this image offers a unique view of the building’s architectural details and engineering. My documentary architecture series seeks to preserve these unrepeatable moments, showing how history, technique and aesthetics come together in spaces that often remain hidden.

The rooftop of the main Post and Telegraph Office, showing the ornaments that decorate the palace and the impressive view of the Port of Barcelona. My documentary architecture series seeks to show not only functional spaces, but also the ornamental details and panoramic views that reveal the architectural richness of this historic building. This image invites viewers to discover the city from a unique and privileged perspective. Eusebi Arnau i Mascort, sculptor (Barcelona 1864-1933)Studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Studied at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and in Rome and Paris, furthering his studies at the Académie Julian. Notable works include the Barcelona Port Customs House, Casa Rupert Garriga and Hospital de Sant Pau in Barcelona. On the Correos building, the County coat of arms is located on Carrer de la Fusteria, above the main entrance marked with the letter F.

From the rooftop of the main Post Office, the great crown sculpture is captured, a witness to Spain’s political history. Over the years, the crown underwent three changes in ornamentation: during the Republic, the Dictatorship and finally the Monarchy, from 1926 to the present day. Manuel Fuxa i Leal, sculptor (Barcelona 1850-1927), created the Crown and the four columns supporting four sculptures that represent, from right to left, Telegraphs, the Post Office, Science and the Navy. Other notable works of his in different locations include The Altar Boy (1871, awarded in Madrid and in Paris in 1910); A Group of Children; and Leda and Neptune (located at the waterfall in Parc de la Ciutadella). My documentary architecture series seeks to show these unique details that connect architecture with history, offering viewers a reflective perspective on memory and the transformation of landmark spaces.
