PALACE

MAIN POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE

The Communications Palace in Plaza de Cibeles was inaugurated in 1919 and is one of the most emblematic buildings of 20th-century Spanish architecture.

The project was designed by architects Antonio Palacios Ramilo (O Porriño, 1874 – Madrid, 1945) and Joaquín Otamendi Machimbarrena (San Sebastián, 1874 – Madrid, 1960).

Designed as the headquarters of the Spanish Post and Telegraph Service, the building became a symbol of the modernisation of communications in Spain and an architectural model for numerous post offices later built in cities across the country.

Its monumental architecture, inspired by eclecticism and monumentalism, is one of the masterpieces of Spanish public architecture.
