The outskirts of Barcelona are the result of successive waves of migration that have shaped the city since the mid-20th century. During the 1950s and 1960s, thousands of people from different regions of Spain arrived, drawn by industrial development, leading to the rapid growth of neighborhoods built on the edges of the city. In recent decades, these same areas have continued to change with the arrival of people from many countries, becoming places of great cultural diversity.
Barcelona’s outskirts reflect the city’s evolution through its housing, industrial estates, infrastructure and communal spaces. It is a landscape where the memory of migration remains inscribed in architecture and everyday life, showing how the territory continually adapts to new ways of living.
